Between 8-10 October 2024, I attended the Nordic-Baltic Network Conference of the International Council for Traditional Music and Dance in Helsinki, Finland – The Past, Present and Future of Ethnomusicology in the Nordic-Baltic Region. I presented a paper by Bob L. T. Sturm and me, “Why make music with AI? Potentials in ethnographic studies of AI music service users”. The paper discusses the values and motivations of people using AI to create music. Through online ethnographic work of Discord servers and interviews with several AI music service users, we have found that many users of these services find value in working with music in ways that are not apparent from the advertising of the companies, i.e., a streamlined push-button-composition-to-distribution pipeline.
